10 Ways to Prepare for Homeownership

1. Decide what you can afford. When starting your journey into the world of homeownership, you first have to figure out in what you can afford. You need to see what your monthly limit is for a possible real estate loan you are going to take out.

2. Develop your home wish list.
Before you even start shopping for your dream home, you need to create a wish list of what you absolutely need to have within your new home. Whether it is 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a pool, a green house, a bar, or even a space ship designed room. You need to start your wish list today.

3. Select where you want to live. Just as important as the wish list, you need to find an area that you are comfortable with. I suggest driving around your area to just get a feel for the neighborhoods, take notes on which you prefer and start there.

4. Start saving. When you start looking for homes or even thinking about looking for a new home, you need to Save Money.

5. Get your credit in order. Before upgrading to a new beautiful home, you’ll most likely need to take out a mortgage loan. Real estate loans are used on almost every real estate transaction. They don’t just give away loans so about 6 months before you need to take it out or even get checked, don’t buy anything that you don’t need.

6. Determine your mortgage qualifications. Setup a meeting with a few mortgage specialists to see what you could qualify for and get a pre-qual too give you hard evidence to show a perspective home owner.

7. Get Pre-Approved. Get all your documents in order so you can get pre-approved quicker.

8. Weigh other sources of help with a down payment. The more of a down payment you can provide for the mortgage the better chance you’ll be able to get a better mortgage rate.

9. Calculate the costs of homeownership. Take property taxes, insurance, maintenance and utilities, and association fees into account because you may quality for the $300,000 mortgage loan but take other expanse into account before you jump into anything over your head.

10. Contact a REALTOR®. When you our setup with your home wish list, home location, savings, credit in order, mortgage qualifications, and you calculate the total cost of homeownership. Contact a Real Estate Agent and interview a few and choose one that you feel comfortable with.
